It is amazing to revisit these stories — I recently read the series to my son, and hopefully my daughter will let me do the same. Episodes like this are burned into my brain, and are nearly as painful to read thirty-plus years later. One of the most striking things is just how many close calls the Ingalls have. Meanwhile, read ‘Farmer Boy’ — the Wilders back in New York were living large, while Laura and Mary are nearly starving. Ma made a lot of sacrifices indeed…
