Beautiful, poignant, and right on the mark. I’ve had this same predilection for men with “potential” — for very different reasons, but with similarly heartbreaking results. Like you, it took me until my late 40s to realize what I was doing in any meaningful way. Now, in my early 50s, I am seeking to heal that part of me where the rescue complex took up residence.
In fact, that is the most significant insight you offer here: These men (and women; I know men who do this, too!) are reflections of ourselves. And until we can see ourselves clearly, we can’t see others clearly.
