The problem with iPad , is the same as it always has been. iOS is nothing more than a crippled version of MacOS and iPad , nothing more than a crippled version of a mac. Of course iPad will vastly outsell macs that are far more expensive. Macs are full blown computers coming with only limitation the ability to upgrade them. iPads limitation is far severe and its three fold, performance, ergonomics and closed system. Performance is a big but not major problem we live in the age of amazing computer capabilities so even a tablet can do quite a lot with its limited specs, still its a no go zone for many professionals or hardcore gamers. Ergonomics is a huge hit for tablets, even with its multitouch interface the fact that you have to obstruct the screen with your hand, the fact that multitouch still has not achieved adequate precision for precision oriented tasks (Apple admitted this failure but introducing what it swore it would not , a pen for iPad pro) and the tiny size of the screen make tablets a extremely difficult option for tasks that require speed, precision and concentration. Hence why the vast majority of tablets are used for emails, Facebook and the occasional candy cash saga.

But the huge problem of the ipad is the closed system, plenty of big companies and expert devs out there that have little intention to indulge Apple’s 30% cut and also a very limited closed system. Hence why we see only “specialised” versions tablet, that suppose to be made to fit more the multitouch and general feel of the tablet but they are just a fraction of the features of the equivalent desktop app. Android is pretty much in a similar situation.

Bloggers love to talk about the war between tablets and PCs, iPads and Macs. There was never a war , Macs are still the undisputed kings of Apple computing , period. iPads are awesome, I have an iPad mini , which is has the perfect size for me to read and watch videos on my bed or while on the move but I would not even begin to consider it replacing my 27'’ late 2013 iMac.

I did try to make music (Sunvox), graphics(Pixelmator) and do coding (Pythonista) on my iMac , but it quickly became apparent that multitouch really fails at these tasks majorly.

As a matter of fact software wise both Android and iOS are at a dead end, with no major software releases the last 5 years at least. Its clear that the time for tablets is coming to an end and we need to make the next step which most likely be VR orientated in a portable form but able to connect and tap into the power of a desktop pc remotely.

The technology is here but needs at least another 10 years of refining to become affordable and ease to use.
