Hey Neal, the fracture you are experiencing is common in most communities. Python has (had?) it between Django and Pyramid, too. It’s a symptom of popularity, and the monolith versus modular debate.

I have been writing PHP for 13 years and I can tell you it’s the same story every time.

And don’t mind people who criticize PHP. I’ve heard it all and it’s not legitimate for the most part. PHP was good enough to build Facebook and it’s good enough for any startup.
