Why So Few Women Keep Their Maiden Names
John McDermott

If a couple is planning on having children, it is easier if everyone in the family has the same last name. From a pure administrative level, it can be difficult for a parent to communicate with schools or health care providers about their children if they first have to explain that, despite having different last names, they are in fact the parent of the child. Of course, it doesn’t have to be the husband’s last name; both partners can decide to take on the wife’s last name, both can change to a hyphenated last name combining each partner’s pre-marriage last name, or they can choose to make up something completely different.
