Hospital is a formal institution developed by the society for patient care intended to meet the complex health needs of its members individual-sick or injured has access to centralized medical knowledge and technology. According to journal from University of Mosul, hospital is a place for the diagnosis and treatment of human ills and restoration of health and well-beings of those temporarily deprived of these.

A brief history of health information system in Indonesia devided by 3 part; manual era, transitional era, and computerization era. The era manual explains the health information system that still uses paper as medium and the data is aggregate, the transitional era explains that there are still use paper and the other use computers as media. The data is aggregated and disaggregated (individual), and confidential is not guaranteed. In the era of computerization, health information accessed using computers as media and data disaggregated (individual) and the confidentiality of patient data is guaranteed. In Indonesia the development of health information system is still relatively minimal than the other countries, especially the usage of PDA ( Personal Digital Assistant) in the nursing practice.

Information technology was first applied at El Camino Hospital, California in the end of 1960. In those days, computers used to process all data the client obtained during the client being treated at hospital. The more years, the more developed health information systems in the world, for example the use of PDAs in some hospitals. The first produced of PDA by Apple in 1993, many function of PDA, there are help people for calculated, input many data, and in health section its help for nursing to save patient information.

Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) very usefull to help nurses in their duties. A PDA organizes personal information, including dates, addresses, memos, and lists. The PDA can also store assessment and diagnostic tools, software programs to manage patient files, language translators, and clinical care management references. According to journal of the American Academy of Nursing Practicioners, in America the usage of PDA approximately 12.3 million PDAs were in use in the United States in 2000. Between 2000 and 2005, the number of PDAs sold annually in the United States increased by 67%, from 6 to 10 million units. That number is predicted to reach 40 million in 2011. The challenges of integrating PDAs into nursing practice are multi-dimensional and include interrelated individual, organizational, and professional components. A descriptive study has found that individual challenges include inexperience with computers, difficultly changing habits, and difficulty accepting new technology. However, the same study showed that nurses with limited computer experience still found the software easy to use, and liked the small pocketsize of PDAs.

Maintaining patient confidentiality is of major concern to hospital staff and nursing professionals. Although hospitals should have policies and methods in place for PDA use, it is ultimately the nurse who is responsible to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained. Therefore nurses should ensure that their PDAs are password protected and that a data encryption program is installed. There are a few major reasons why PDAs are used in both the medical and nursing professions. Firstly, PDAs provide speed for data collection and data analysis. Secondly, PDAs are widely used in both medical and nursing practices. Thirdly, PDAs are becoming widely used for educational purposes. There are functional of PDA; to deliver essential clinical information to physicians and healthcare staff wherever and whenever they need, physicians being able to order any medical test at their finger tips, and the use of PDAs provides the opportunity for physicians to record their medical notes or create referral letters by using the voice recording function within the PDA.

One of the most prominent goals of modern nursing today is for make a body of knowledge based Proof that was approved and used this knowledge to guide and give reasons for service the best care. Despite trying to build a knowledge base going forward, struggle for the transition this knowledge into nursing approved everyday (Dawson & Thomas, 1999). Personal digital assistant (PDA) has the ability to make information based on evidence that is available to nurses when and where only they need it. PDAs have the potential to reduce error in care with provides a portable reference source and convenient for health care providers. Research into the etiology of errors Treatment has shown that Most errors occur because of lack of status knowledge patient health and / or deterioration knowledge of prescribed drugs (Leape et al., 1995). Benefits and challenges in use Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) at Nursing:

  1. Can be used anywhere or anytime
  2. Access easy accsess to very large amount of data reduce the incident of drugs error.
  3. Improve communication between nurse and nurse with other health team members.
  4. Improve efficiency and accuracy nursing documentation
  5. Versy useful for collect document patient.

From the explanation it can be concluded indirectly that the impact of the use of PDAs in nursing practice has a profound effect on helping nurses to facilitate their work. Some advantages explained, PDA is highly recommended for use by Indonesian nurses because this makes time effective and helps nurses to collaborate with doctors and monitor patients in patient care.
