Dining-Focused Dating App Dine Reveals
Vancouver’s Most Popular Restaurants for First Dates

Male and female choices differ except the top three

VANCOUVER — January 14, 2016 — Dine, an “on-demand” dating app focused on dining, today unveiled a list of desirable Vancouver restaurants for daters. The list is ranked by how many times they have been selected by Dine users as their top three choices for their first dates. According to Dine’s data, the most popular among male users was Chambar, a Belgian restaurant in Downtown, and female Dine users’ top pick was Miku, the Downtown restaurant known for Aburi-style sushi. While the same restaurants occupied the top three spots for male and female choices, the rest differed significantly across genders (see below table for top 20 first-date restaurants by men and women).

Unlike most online dating services, Dine requests all users to select up to three restaurants where they wish to go on a first date with their matches. Each day, the app displays different candidates and their restaurant wish lists. If the user is interested in any of the candidates, he or she will pick a restaurant from the wish list to send a Dine request. If the matched user accepts the request, the two will be able to text chat directly to arrange a date at a mutual time. According to user records, more than 50 percent of users who connected with their matches on Dine actually met in person within two weeks.

Launched in August 2015 as an iPhone app, Dine is currently available as a free download only in Vancouver with plans for a worldwide launch in 2016. The app allows people to use all features for free, while they can also join the premium plan with a monthly fee of $19.99 Canadian dollars to send and accept requests to and from any other Dine users.

“Vancouver has a variety of amazing restaurants for first dates, and Dine users have clearly proven that,” said Keisuke Kamijo, CEO of Mrk & Co, the developer of Dine. “Dine users typically start their first conversation with ‘When do you want to meet?’ and most of them do meet in person. This is contrastive to typical online dating services where the matched users first text each other about their hobbies and jobs, and most of them never meet. I hope Dine will continue encouraging love-seekers to actually go out there and dine with their potential dates at local restaurants in Vancouver — and eventually in cities around the world — instead of just swiping and texting on their mobile screens.”
