Arts & emotional well-being

Tom Saporito has a conflicted view towards drawing. A gifted, mostly self-taught, illustrator, Tom has wrestled with his gift. He loves to do it, but possibly, because he cares about it so much, the prospect of making his work public becomes somewhat difficult. However, despite the ebbs and flows of his life, and his varying relationship to his art, Tom eventually comes back to the white empty page, sharpies in hand, feeling something that can be processed through the printed image.

After speaking with Tom, pondering the powerful images, and allowing the passing of time, certain recurring themes have slowly risen to the surface. One of the main themes was the redemptive power of the arts, as well as the creative process as a means to cope with more difficult times. By thinking, feeling, drawing, looking, erasing, and drawing once more—a kind of unending looping that can lull him into a sense of peace—Tom attempts to re-write the challenges of his past into a more bearable present, and a more hopeful future.

Life becomes drawing. Drawing begets life.
