Dystopia

So… I was at home this weekend, watching black mirror, which is about dystopian futures and what not. And after watching a few episodes I got depressed, you know, that depression that comes after watching something awful and hoping it won’t happen…

I went outside for coffee and a smoke and just immersed myself in thought, and during that thinking session I came to a conclusion that royally fucked up any optimism I might have nurtured for our current state as a species.

We already live in a dystopian future, how we can still get shocked at artistic renderings of dystopian futures is beyond me. I propose the following exercise, think, like really think about everything that is going on around you, of all the tragedies, lies and ways to control you as an individual. And tell me what you came up with.

We are merrily being distracted by what I can only call entertainment overload, most of us are on several social media platforms, eating up half truths and idiotic theories put up by most of its members. Governments and public media use these platforms as a way to put out their beliefs and how they want us to view current events. We binge on Netflix and videogames, and slowly become desensitised by the shit storm of horrible, unbelievable things happening around us.

We are being controlled through entertainment and controlled output of relevant information, just enough to shock us, but not nearly enough to get us thinking. We eat up fake news as if it were true, and disregard the blatant stupidity of our “rulers”, a very good example is that sorry excuse for a human being named Trump, questioning global warming, and indirectly supporting right wing extremism. At this point in time, and as stupid as it may sound, I can’t say who is worse Kim or Trump. Side effects from Trump’s stupidity are global. But this is just an example, there are so many occurrences I could refer to but I’d like to keep this short.

So what is the conclusion? Well I was depressed because of things that might happen, I am now dead inside because we are already living an episode of black mirror, but most of us don’t care or never really took the time to think about it…

And there is no real solution, because our species as a whole has to evolve. And historically evolution takes time, a very long time. Maybe in a few thousand years we’ll be evolved enough to live in a just and socially conscious world. Provided we don’t provoke our own extinction in the process.
