Every year in June, the world celebrates ‘Pride Month’. This pride is about raising one’s voice for their rights, refreshing minds and hearts with the liberating breeze of free thought, and embracing love and generosity. ‘Pride Month’ serves as a reminder of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York. At that time, homosexuality was illegal in the country, and the New York police frequently raided gay bars. On June 28th, police opened fire on several homosexual individuals, leading to a massive parade at Stonewall in protest of police brutality. Subsequently, to commemorate that day, Pride Parades are held worldwide every year.
This struggle saw a significant milestone in 2013 when Barack Obama, as the first U.S. President, embraced the LGBTQ+ community in his speech. He stated, “As long as our gay brothers and sisters do not have equal rights, this fight is not over.”
