Pompeo’s Fourth Visit to North Korea Gets Cancelled by Trump
US President Donald Trump precipitously canceled the planned trip of the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo to North Korea. He even readily admitted that the effort taken by the US to make Pyongyang surrender its nuclear weapons had come to a halt.
Trump condemned China for not being able to make any advancement in regards to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. He even added that all the discussion till date held with Pompeo would be on hold and it would resume once the trade feud with Beijing comes to an end.
The sudden shift of tone in Trump is very surprising. Earlier he commented that North Korea is not any longer a nuclear threat to the US and he even called his 12th June summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a success. However, Trump added that he has urged Pompeo not to go to North Korea as no eagerness could be seen from the end of North Korea over denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Since the June summit all discussions have remained dead head. While Pompeo demanded real steps towards North Korea’s forsaking of its nuclear arsenal, Pyongyang is trying to ensure that Washington takes its first concessions.
The decision taken by Trump comes immediately after Pompeo announced that he would be visiting North Korea along with Stephen Biegun. Trump requested Pompeo not to go for the meeting.
Key officials learned about the decision of trump from news channel and some learned it from a meeting on North Korea negotiations. However, some intelligence officials stated that Pompeo’s last visit to be an untimely one and the chance of serious headway to be vague.
Although Trump showed interest to hold another summit with Kim, however, the latest turn of events from the end of North Korea forced Trump to rethink again.
