I think he wanted to make damn sure he was dead, and quickly, very quickly. He was horrified at what had happened for instance to Mussolini (captured by leftist Italian partisans and shot, his body — and the bodies of others with him including his wife or mistress — hung gruesomely, upside down, on public display). He wouldn’t have maybe figured he’d face precisely the same fate; given the fact that his odds of being captured by German partisans or anti-Nazis was probably remote since most domestic resistance was long since crushed (dead, or in Dachau or someplace like that). But being captured by the advancing Russians was the real threat. I think he feared being taken by the Soviets more so than by angry elements from among his own populace (though theoretically, in the event of total collapse of control, it could perhaps have become possible in some areas).
He also wanted his body thoroughly burnt; not just for the whole ‘Viking funeral’ ‘Valhalla’ aspect of it, but more so to ensure that not even his corpse could be viewed or handled (or abused or otherwise desecrated) by the enemy.
He knew that capture by the Russians however would probably have been, particularly in his case, a fate ‘worse than death’. He would have ended up ultimately hanging, to be sure, either way, regardless of which allied side had gotten him. Probably following some kind of trial (a relatively legit trial if he had fallen into the hands of the western Allies; or more like a ‘show trial’ if he’d ended up in Soviet hands, after torture, etc). And ending up in Soviet hands seemed the most likely outcome, given the situation at the time.
Therefore he decided to bite down on the cyanide capsule and, while there was still a half a minute or so when one could do so (probably less than a minute; I’m not really sure), put his pistol to his temple immediately after biting down.
Realistically he probably didn’t even feel the results of the cyanide since it’s thought that he shot himself immediately after taking it. Even a botched self-shot to the side of the head will, at the very least, render you unconscious immediately. Survivors of self-inflicted head shots have reported not even having much memory of it, per se, in some cases just remembering putting the gun to their head and that was it. One woman’s account that I read said that she remembered the deafening sound, but then nothing. A loss of time after that. And waking up (however long afterward it was) in the hospital, having lost her eyesight and somewhat disfigured herself, but alive.
