In Regards to Иew Radicals: An Open Letter

Dear Jonny,

I hadn’t thought about the band New Radicals in years… that is, until you sent this out into the world:

That was probably the nicest thing you had to say about their one and only album. In fact, I was almost tempted to ask if you were an elm tree because you were throwing some blatant shade. Let me refresh your memory:

TBH, I had never listened to their album, Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too, in its entirety. Sure, I knew and loved “You Get What You Give” and was… aware… of “Someday We’ll Know” but in all these years it hadn’t even occurred to me that an entire album might be out there in the world. I know it’s silly to be so myopic about something like this, but whatever.

I had to see if you were right. The mean-spirited internet troll who lives in the darker corners of my mind wanted it to be as bad as you implied. However, after spending the weekend with MYBBT I am confident in writing to you that you are grievously mistaken.

The album is a fever dream of pop, rock, funk, and jazz. There are times in the album where Gregg Alexander’s vocals are just slightly off-key and you know what? I kinda love it. I love the celebratory-yet-critical-of-society tone of tracks like “Mother We Just Can’t Get Enough” and “You Get What You Give”. I love the way the story in “I Hope I Didn’t Just Give Away The Ending” unfolds. I love the disheveled feel that winds through each track; like each one was recorded in a flash of midnight inspiration in some dingy New York basement apartment without any afterthought. Okay, I actually really love this record.

Listen, I understand everything isn’t for everyone but come on, man; what about this album is so bad?

Hope all is well. Say hi to Ethel for me.
