Title: Informative but short on insight

Review: An excellent, highly readable summary of the development and consequences of PG&E’s history of prioritizing profits over common sense safety precautions, even against the advice of their own engineers and experts. But as someone who lost her home and neighborhood in the 2017 PG&E fires, and as a vocal advocate for fire victims, I wish the author had not been so reserved in her judgments and insights.
The author quotes others to describe how hedge funds hijacked the bankruptcy process for their own benefit, how they reaped billions in cash and profits, how they shifted future risk onto fire victims. All true, but there is so much more. The lesson of the PG&E story is not the stock-market-driven focus on short-term gain over long-term stability and social responsibility. That’s an old story and often told.
The added tragedy was the failure of the bankruptcy system to protect unwilling, vulnerable creditors (fire victims) from the gamesmanship of the hedge funds and lawyers. The bankruptcy system was crafted by large creditors to protect themselves against the mismanagement or misfortune of the DEBTOR. But in the PG&E case, the system was used to reward opportunistic investors at the expense of fire victims. Sadly, most of the lawyers representing fire victims went along with it.
It has been more than five years since the fire consumed our home. Only this year did we received ANY compensation. I know fire victims who are still waiting for any payment at all. I wish the author had shown more of the impact on fire victims other than Abrams. There are more compelling stories out there.
I also wish the author had addressed how much the bankruptcy industry is a fee-driven feeding frenzy. Bankruptcy lawyers (on all sides), accountants, consultants, even the trustees and administrators of the Fire Victim Trust routinely bill up to $1500 an hour. Ultimately, those fees are paid by the customers and shareholders of PG&E, including the fire victims.
We were burned twice, and then some.

Review: Missing critical component about why the fires become so large. Why there are so many trees in strike distance. The failure of California to maintain the forests is crucial. Timber companies who played a crucial role in thinning trees and keeping vegetation to a minimum is crucial. I’d urge her to go look at a privately managed forest in the service area and state and federal land.
Poppy does have one thing right the task of tree management is gargantuan. The State played a huge role in that, they should have more responsibility to assist. She doesn’t expound on CPUCs control over allow PG&Es spending, and how the state has forced over the years PGE to fund green energy projects at the expense of maintaining the infrastructure. Newsoms grand plans for all electric, especially on accelerated artificial time table, they should contribute to the electric system upgrades required instead of making all the utilities pay from their own pockets electric charging stations.
She also at the end confuses weather events with climate change. Our problem according to ICC is an increase in global temperatures determined by climate models ( that worked well for Covid, didn’t it?) A cold snap in Texas? The failure in Texas was a system too dependent on Green due to government tax credits, similar problem in CA. Closing of gas generation plants and Nuclear is why we can’t let people keep the AC on. Natural Gas is what got us to those huge decreases in CO2 emissions.

Review: This book is better than I’d surmised from ads. Nice, revealing insights into California’s PG&E history. However, the purchase was a “new” hardcover copy, from Amazon, but it was shipped loose, in a large box with several other items. The bookcover didn’t arrive “new”. Fortunately, as a former librarian, quick repair was possible. Also, price for “new” was too much like best used prices, so fortune smiled, with a modicum of luck. Careless shipping.

Title: Hidden Truth You Don’t See in the Energy Debate or from Politicians

Review: As a “victim” of the CA fires of 2017, I nearly lost my residence. I watched for a week while the fires lept over and smoked the Mayacamas mountain range, separating the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. I found this title in an intriguing Wall Street Journal Review and had a personal interest in digging into the facts.

This is a well-researched, easy to read historical account. It covers not just events leading to PG&E’s bankruptcy and admission of manslaughter, but fundamental issues surrounding our electric grid, in a state of neglect. Ms. Blunt understands and makes simple the arcane world of moving from regulated Commission oversight, to the dynamics of a wholesale market. This includes the entry of our dear friend Enron into price and trading manipulation.

I now watch the headlines more informed, as CA vacillates between mandating all EVs by 2035 and simultaneously sending texts to its residences pleading to ration energy use in temperatures of 105 and above. The cost of electricity should have declined over the past decade. But if you look under the hood of Hunt’s recount of the paradise disaster, or the SEC filings of our utilities, you see massive capital programs intended to bring the Grid into a new century of EVs and protect against fire risk.
