This reads a lot like the Nuggets’ aggressive pursuit of D-Wade last summer. There was very little chance Denver was going to land Wade, but it signalled real ambition for a franchise that doesn’t typically get meetings with high-profile stars. (And Wade publicly showed them respect afterwards, which was a nice bonus.)
Same for the Blazers — they’re not getting Melo, but there’s real value in signalling to the rest of the NBA that the franchise and its two stars have their sights set very high.
