Plex Prerolls: Beautiful Personalized intros in your Plex Library

A lot of Plex users don’t know the Plex Pre-rolls or the so called “Cinema Trailers” feature which is present in Plex natively. An excerpt from Plex’s own website defines it as:

The Cinema Trailers feature allows you to automatically have movie trailers played before the “main feature” when you start playing a movie, which helps provide a more cinema-like experience.

It is just a short clip that play before your movies whenever anybody plays them. It can be anything, a message, an intro or a warning.

For custom names, you can navigate to this channel or this website. You will find amazing intros and pre-rolls. Thanks to this guy for making hundreds of custom versions of popular intros, as now we have a lot of choices! I chose the Marvel Studios one, as nothing comes close to its beauty!

A custom Marvel Studios Plex Pre-roll

It got completed in a day (Woohoo!!). Now we place it in our Plex directory and set it up to play before our movies.

Setting Up

To set up, make sure the users who watch (or you) will need to have the “Cinema Trailers” feature enabled in your Plex App wherever you watch it. The “Enable Cinema Trailers” advanced library setting must also be enabled for the library.

1. Go to Plex Media Server, and Settings > Extras and click on the “Show Advanced” button at the top right of the settings area.

2. You can add the full path to the Pre-rolls here. Something like mine:

/Users/Anant Mantri/Plex Collection/pre-rolls/Marvel Studios.mp4

You can also add multiple files by adding:

comma: They will play sequentially i.e. one after other before each movie.

/Users/Anant Mantri/Plex Collection/pre-rolls/Marvel Studios.mp4, /Users/Anant Mantri/Plex Collection/pre-rolls/Netflix.mp4, /Users/Anant Mantri/Plex Collection/pre-rolls/HBO.mp4

semi-colon: One of the videos will play randomly (I use this one).

/Users/Anant Mantri/Plex Collection/pre-rolls/Netflix.mp4;

Now we are ready to show off our amazing pre-rolls. These can be seen by all the users who have the “Cinema Trailers” option enabled in their Plex App’s settings.

Now start your desired movie and watch your new plex-preroll!
