The DIW team is excited to be back from Decentralized 2018, the leading conference, that was held in Athens, Greece this year. Decentralized is mainly a Blockchain conference but also covers in lesser format Artificial Intelligence and other Innovative technologies. The conference was held at the Divani Caravel Hotel and hosted over 1200 attendees and 70 renowned speakers from more than 50 countries around the world. It was great to see that everyone had a common interest — Blockchain and other Innovative technologies — and be in a place where individuals could exchange knowledge and ideas based on innovative business and political implications of Blockchain technologies.
Needless to say, DIW were also members of this world-class summit. As many of our community members will know, the DIW team had the opportunity to attend a Decentralized event that was held in Cyprus in 2017, and this year DIW were privileged to participate yet again in Decentralized 2018. But of course the DIW team knew that they were to expect much greater things. The team had good expectations upon finding out about Decentralization 2018 in Athens because they were aware of how well prepared and how well executed this event would be.
The organisers of the event — the University of Nicosia also known as “The Bitcoin University” was in fact the first University to accept cryptocurrencies as a method of payment and they actually brought most of us closer to Blockchain. Due to their reputable achievements in the past, this event was to be very good but as we will mention further down, it was an even greater event with many presentations and applications given to all its members.
Presentations were given by many Blockchain experts and Founders like Roger Ver of Bitcoin.com who we appreciated his speech about how Bitcoin is meant to be used as cash and a brief outlook of what the future holds for cryptocurrencies such as BCH. He urged everyone to start using cryptocurrencies for everyday transactions. The same approach was seen by other speakers.
It was nice to receive many updates by European Parliament member, Eva Kaili, who spoke about EU related technological improvements and Regulations. It was interesting to get a little background view of how she was drawn into the Blockchain field and where she stands with it today. She also touched on how the European Parliament view Crypto assets and Blockchain and how this technology can remedy trust in politics and the financial services sector. She emphasised also on how many ICOs nowadays are fraudulent and how these must prove to deliver their promises. Finally, she closed her inspiring speech with a positive note on how important Blockchain is and why we should take advantage of this technology now.
Our very own, Simon Zenios, who specializes in ICOs and Blockchain start-ups, was part of a panel discussion on GDPR and Blockchain along with Professors of Law, Achilles Emilianides, Anna Plevri, Ian Gaucci and Marcus Hallside and together they discussed in detail how GDPR and Blockchain technology contradict each other sometimes but also how important it is for them to co-exist as long as development companies pay careful attention to this.
Emphasis was also given to Stablecoins and how they could be the future for cryptocurrencies as they would bring more balance to the crypto market and be less volatile in the current state of the coin market.
Throughout the conference, it was duly noted that today’s society — mainly focusing on those who have and use crypto assets — find it difficult to use their crypto assets for daily payments, for example paying the rent for an apartment or house using cryptocurrency. This was a problem that was emphasized at the event.
In conclusion, this event was educational, productive and overall an amazing experience. The DIW team enjoyed every moment of the event, we look forward to meeting our new and old friends and connections made at Decentralized 2018 and we cannot wait for the next event.
