Vedic Astrology
Occam’s razor: simplest explanation is always the best one, but when it comes to explaining human mind and the universe, it does not fit, they are far more complex than we can possible imagine and no simplest explanation can ever explain these two things. I am neither a physicist on a path to understanding the universe nor a neuroscientist digging up my own brain to find out what is inside human mind however one thing that connects me with both of these fields is astrology. When it comes to explaining astrology both human mind and universe has to be explained.
Astrology can be defined as study that deals with the influence of heavenly bodies on lives of human beings and their fate. According to the principles of astrology there is a direct correlation between human fate and the heavenly bodies such as planets, constellations and even asteroids.
The origin of predictive Hindu astrology dates back to 7th and 8th century A.D when the compilation of Brihat parashar Hora shastra “the book of astrology” written by parashar was published, an ancient sage also the father of ved vyas (author of mahabharat) ; later during 1980’s it was popularized as Vedic astrology for its promotion in the west. Though Vedic astrology is now one of the most popular belief systems around the world it has not been accepted from the mainstream scientists as a science simply because astrology of any kind has not been able to prove its validity in any controlled experiments what so ever, so the question stands why does astrology still remain popular? May be the answer is human nature, people never get tired of running after their fate, if the predictions are wrong they blame it on the astrologer for wrong predictions not astrology itself. Believers of astrology tend to think that it’s a divine science and very few people have the ability to understand it thus it has stood tall for many centuries.
The skeptics of astrology disapprove astrology through various scientific logic such as confirmation bias, Barnum effect, cold reading, and self-fulfilling prophecies and so on while the proponents of astrology go as far as bringing principles of quantum physics such as quantum entanglement in explaining the workings of astrology which leads to the notion that everything is interconnected. In many cases they back it up by Nikola Tesla’s theory that everything in the universe is energy and in some rare occasions they have even included general theory of relativity (gravity affects space and time) hence it affects us. Even if astrology is not a science there is no proper method for disproving astrology because it is impossible to prove a negative, and if it is true then there are not any valid scientific principles that explain its working.
Astrology is whether a science or not let’s leave it up to the scientist but over these years the biggest advantage that I’ve seen of astrology in my sixteen years of practice that of its placebo effect. Placebo effect is one of medical procedures accepted all over the world today. Placebo is a way of treating a patient in such a way that he/she is given a sugar pill (generally) in place of the medicine without the patient’s knowledge. In this process the brain creates a physiological response to disease believing the sugar pill as a real medicine and hence the patient gets better. Similarly in astrology if an astrologer instills a positive belief with some astrological remedies then placebo will come into play; exactly opposite of placebo is Nocebo.
In India astrology has been introduced in universities as jyotir bigyan despite the protest of scientific communities, due to this we all can be sure that astrology will stay here for longer period of time so in that case the only common ground for astrology and science is psychology and use of astrology as treatment method on basis of placebo. Carl Jung a famous psychiatrist used astro psychology as treatment method however his method was scientifically flawed and was heavily criticized by scientific communities however one cannot deny the fact that he has cured many of his patients from astrology.
In conclusion there is no proper method to categorize predictive astrology as mainstream science however If we take Occam’s Razor in consideration the relation between the heavenly bodies and the human is through the gravitational pull of the planets on Earth. The heavenly bodies affects the fluid in our body as moon does to the waves of the ocean which then affects our thoughts henceforth actions changing our destiny.
