Disanxian Raw Punk Interview by Ryan Dyer @AbsoluteUnderground

Disanxian 地-三鮮 — Örganic Raw Punk from Shenzhen

  1. Disanxian has been around since 2016, tell me about the beginnings of the band.

I have to say this band name started as a joke. Takeshi (ex-Macrochord, Alpha Helix, Jet Boys etc.), our original drummer had a weird idea popped up in his head when we had night snacks together, said we might take the “Dis” prefix from Chinese cuisine Disanxian(地三鮮) to start a D-beat(Discore, Stenchcore, Crust) band as most of these bands paid homage to the godfather Discharge and named after them with “Dis”. That probably triggered a general concept that Disanxian was meant to be all about jokes and satirical things around us.

  1. What was the scene like at the time in Shenzhen? Who were the other notable bands in the city? What were some of the main venues? Are they still around?

Absolute zero “scene” when we started this band but now hardcore, especially new school hardcore is big in Shenzhen from the country’s perspective. The Wöks (Proto-punk,old school punk), Shoot the gun(metallic moshcore), What a beautiful day(melodic hardcore) are the ones active in Shenzhen scene. I have to admit all venues except the world-renowned B10 all suck bags of dxxks! Charges are ridiculously high to organizers but they do nothing in promoting bands and culture. All they care about is $$$!

  1. You played with notable bands like Hell City and Dummy Toys. Who was or is your favorite Chinese punk band?

Demerit for sure! They are still speaking for the poor and weak and act as what real punx ought to be.

  1. Disanxian’s debut album, The Greatest Outrageous Famine, was released in 2017. What did you want to say about the famine and how did it tie into modern times?

You got the score lol. I had mixed Takeshi Kitano’s Outrage(極悪非道)with a major brutal disaster “the great famine” in 60s China to this wordplay, trying to revoke the recognition of how inhumane the authoritarianism can be. Nothing changes in 2020s, things are worsened as everyone see in Covid lockdowns.

As a heads-up, we are now recording new album called The Ultimate AgriKVLTural Revolution(究極農業進化)to continuously impose the infamous images from the major nationwide oppression — Cultural Revolution led by Mao Tze Tung in 60s — 70s China.

  1. Did you have ties to the Hong Kong scene as well?

Yes. We had close connection with Hong Kong since I graduated from there. We had a couple of shows in almost all tiny venues in Hong Kong. Besides Disanxian members formed band M.E.A.T.S (fastcore, grindcore) with Hong Kong punx too.

  1. What is your status with the band right now since you moved to Calgary?

Disanxian never stops. I had Demoslaught666’s frontman Puppy sing for the band when I was away from that region.

  1. How do you feel about the crust/punk/thrash scenes in this city?

It’s funny to see after years, we had formed several bands in theses sectors, but the scene did not grow that much. Probably extreme music without pleasant melodies like shoegaze/post-rock is really hard to fit in major music fans’ radars.

  1. What differences do you find in the venues and fans in Canada compared to China?

Venues in Calgary are great in size, well organized, really know the culture well and willing to promote. Fans are way more calm than I expected as the hardcore crowd from my place was extremely crazy in mosh, crowdkill, skank or even kung-fu kicks.

  1. You toured several cities in China. What were your favorite places and venues?

Vox & Wuhan Prison(Yes, the exact Covid city. Run by Chinese punk legend SMZB), DMC (Tsingtao, run by Demerit)

  1. Have you started any musical projects in Calgary yet?

I would love to after I successfully find a job! Some friends from gigs invited me to start bands too.

  1. Tell me about Dizine:

I started Dizine地誌 as soon as Disanxian was formed. The initial idea was a webzine to promote obscure bands I knew from different regions. I used Dizine book shows too so it can a label as well.

  1. Disanxian just played a few shows with Kruelty from Japan and Demonslaught 666. What are Disanxian’s ties to Demonslaught?

As I mentioned we have 2 vocalists now. Puppy the frontman of Demonslaught666 growls for Disanxian too (in Black thrashy way).

  1. Disanxian just released the Canton Thrashcore Triad (廣東叁核耗材市場): Disanxian (Crust/D-Beat) + VENT (Thrashcore/Crossover) + Diarrhea (Hardcore punk). What are some details regarding this release?

This comp. will be out soon. The overall concept was initiated by Jin of Hexfire and me to reawake people’s care about the long neglected homeless migrant workers in Sanhe, Shenzhen, a place closed to Foxconn (Yes, they are working for the sweat factories to manufacture iPhones). NHK Japan interviewed those workers and released a shocking documentary 「三和人材市場〜中国・日給1500円の若者たち〜」,go check it out.

  1. How does the scene in Shenzhen look now in 2023?

After a total lockdown in the past 3 years, shows were flourishing all over the year, especially for famous Japanese and Taiwanese bands who were highly hyped in Shenzhen. Hope the no-go restriction is forever away and the scene become bigger.
