It's a dizzyingly strategic game mode variation!

Time for battle!

Introduction

Dizzy Duo Battle is a tactical card game played in rounds where players hold six cards in their hands and take and discard cards in turn to make the strongest possible combination of two Lizzies (Dizzy Duo). The strength of your Dizzy Duo is determined by the number of combinations you manage to make.

Everyone starts the game with 20 lives and the goal of this game is to wipe out the lives of all your opponents! You do this by putting together the strongest Dizzy Duo each round and going to battle!

Valid & Invalid combinations

Game mechanics — valid combinations

The Dizzy Lizzy must always at least satisfy one of the following four combination conditions:

1. All colours are the same
2. All colours are different
3. All patterns are the same
4. All patterns are different

If the Lizzy combination exists out of three golden cards, it’s a Special Dizzy Lizzy.

Combination scores per Lizzy

Game mechanics — Combination scores per Lizzy

One Lizzy can display multiple combinations. The more combinations the Lizzy has the stronger it becomes and the more attack power it gains. The combination variations are:

  • One combination in the Lizzy (e.g. all blue, no pattern combination). Attack power: 1
  • Two combinations in the Lizzy (e.g. all blue, all patterns different). Attack power: 2
  • Two combinations in the Lizzy with all the same (e.g. all blue, all dots) Attack power: 3
  • Two combinations in the Lizzy with all different (all colours different, all patterns different) Attack power: 3
  • Special Dizzy Lizzy combination (three golden cards) Attack power: 5
Extra combination scores per Dizzy Duo

Game mechanics —Dizzy Duo Combinations

Your Lizzies cooperate! The more matching combinations they have, the stronger their combined attack power becomes. The Lizzy duo bonus combinations are:

  1. Both Lizzies have the same combination type — the combination types are: Both ‘colours same’, both ‘colours different’, both ‘patterns same’, both ‘patterns different’ (example: 1 all blue, 1 all purple = both ‘colours same’). Attack power: +1
  2. Both Lizzies have exactly the same combination — both are entirely the same colour, entirely the same pattern or have different colours or patterns in exactly the same order (example: both all dots). Attack power: +2
  3. Both Lizzies consist of three gold cards (Special Dizzy Duo). Attack power +10

One Dizzy Duo can display up to two bonus combinations simultaneously (example: 1 all blue + all patterns, 1 all purple + all patterns in the same order = +1 for both ‘colours same’ and +2 for both patterns exact same combination, total +3!

Calculating the attack strength of a Dizzy Duo!

Game mechanics — Calculating Dizzy Duo strength

The individual attack powers of your two Lizzies, added together with the Lizzy duo bonus, make up the total attack power of your Dizzy Duo. For example:

  • Lizzy 1. All blue, no pattern combination. Attack power Lizzy = 1
  • Lizzy 2. All blue, all pattern dots. Attack strength Lizzy = 2
  • Lizzy combination. Both all blue, no pattern match. Attack power bonus = + 2
  • Total attack power of this example Dizzy Duo = 1 + 2 + 2 = 5

Did an opponent attack before you complete two Lizzies? Then your attack power is as high as the Lizzy you do have. If you didn’t manage to create any Lizzies at all, then your attack power is 0.

To battle!

Game mechanics — To battle!

Once the attack is launched by one of the players, the attacker fights every defending player, one at a time. For each fight, the defender uncovers his/her cards to compare attack power. The winner of each fight receives as many lives as the loser’s total attack power, and the loser loses as many lives as the winner’s attack power. Example:

  1. There are three players, player 1 attacks with a total attack power of 5.
  2. Player 2 defends with an attack power of 3 and loses. Player 1 receives 3 lives, and player 2 loses 5 lives.
  3. Player 3 defends with an attack power of 6 and wins. Player 3 receives 5 lives, player 1 loses 6 lives.
  4. At the end of this round, player 1 has lost three lives, player 2 has lost five lives, and player 3 has gained five lives.
Preparation for a game with 3 players.

Preparation

  1. All playing cards are shuffled.
  2. Each player receives 6 playing cards blind; this is their opening hand.
  3. The rest of the cards are placed in a blind pile in the middle.
  4. The top card of the blind pile is placed face-up next to the blind pile, this is the first card of the open pile.
A player draws a purple-striped tail and puts back a purple-dotted body on the open stack.

Gameplay

  1. The game starts as soon as the first player either takes the top face-up card or the top blind card and then the player puts one of his/her cards back on the face-up pile.
  2. This is followed by the next player who may do the same. In this way, all players play at least three rounds with the aim of forming the strongest possible Dizzy Duo combination.
  3. After three rounds, any player with two Lizzies complete may choose to attack by taking a card from the closed pile and immediately placing it back face up on the open pile and calling an attack.
  4. The attacker of the round attacks each defending player individually (see also: Game mechanics — Attack!), and the attacker may choose in which order.
  5. The lives gained/lost are written down and the next round starts with the first player after the last attacking player.
  6. The rounds continue until only one player has lives left, that is the winner!
Rules are meant to be… discussed!

Rules

  • Lives — All players start the game with the same number of lives (default = 20).
  • No snooping — Players are not allowed to see each other’s cards during play.
  • Swapping cards — ‘Each turn, players must take 1 card from the blind or open pile and then put 1 card back on top of the open pile. This may be the same card.
  • Taking turns — Players play in turns (clockwise).
  • Dizzy Duo attack — A player may not attack until they have two Lizzies complete AND all players have had 3 turns.
  • To battle! — Players attack by placing a card from the blind pile face-down back on the open pile and calling an attack.
  • Battling — Battling takes place 1 on 1 between the attacker and each individual defender.
Battle all — The attacker must attack all defenders, but may choose the order.
Winning lives — The winner of each fight receives as many lives as the loser has attack points.
Losing lives — The loser of each fight loses as many lives as the winner has attack points.
Next round — Each new round starts with the player on the turn after the previous attacking player.

Alternative rules

  • Lifeline — If a player has zero lives they may return to the game once with the same number of lives as the player with the fewest lives in the game.
  • Points instead of lives — The game can also be played with points instead of lives. Then the winner of each battle receives as many points as the loser has attack points, and the loser loses as many points as the winner has attack points. The difference is that the scores keep going up and players cannot ‘go off’ (as with zero lives). Players can set their own points goal in advance for the winner.
  • Open battles — Players can choose to immediately put the Dizzy Duo combinations of both the attacking and all defending players on the table during an attack. This gives an extra advantage to the attacker, as he/she gets to decide the order of his/her attacks.
  • Main attack — Players cannot attack with any blind-stack card, but only with a head card.
