ROCK X PAPER X SCISSORS X ALIEN X LASER GUN

Sometimes the ideas that make us smile the most come when we least expect them. This is such an example; coming as a literal ‘shower thought’:

“What if we’d reimagine rock, paper, scissors, as a speed-dice game?”

This led us to come up with Rock, Paper, Scissors, Alien, Laser Gun: A quick dice game where the aliens attempt to sabotage ‘rock, paper, scissors’, while the laser guns try to protect it, and the players can win by being the first to spot each throw’s winning category!

Current sample being playtested! Very pocket friendly, very flashy flashy!

Our current sample for playtesting comes in the shape of a cute little magnet box, with eight ‘sort-off-white’ dice and one ‘sort-of-blue’ one, plus a fun little booklet… That also explains stuff.

In this throw ‘alien’ wins! Curious why? Go have a read of the instruction booklet below!

About those explanations… Why be secretive? Ideas are worth sharing after all! So, have a look at the full (little) instruction booklet below, and imagine yourself showing off your quickness at the table during game night.

Please note: Rock, Paper, Scissors, Alien, Laser Gun is in its playtesting phase! All elements may be subject to finetuning and revision before the final product.

Text pages 1 & 2: Hi… welcome!

Two ways to play here: first, you should start off playing “QUICK ‘N EASY” (page 2) and get familiar with the ‘logic’ of this all.

But after, please add the blue dice to get “DOWN ‘N DICEY” (page 13), where the real madness starts! We hope you’ll get there.

Thanks for playing!

You know how rock, paper, scissors works, right?

Ok cool… But what if there’s an alien that comes to mess things up and take the win? Well, that is… Unless the laser gun shoots the alien! That all sounds awfully strange… let’s go step-by-step, and take a closer look.

Text pages 3 & 4: We’ll be throwing dice… and try to be the first to spot the winner.

When three dice are thrown, two are paper, and one is scissors, scissors wins! The number of papers does not matter. (We’ve yet to see a scissors that can’t cut through several papers!)

But when a dice thrown with an ‘alien’ is involved…

It will try to sabotage the game! Aliens come to steal ‘all the world’s valuables’, no better place to start than with rocks, papers, and scissors! Since aliens snatch it all, as long as there is a surviving alien on
the table, alien wins!

But that won’t be the case if the laser guns have any say in this!

Text pages 5 & 6: When there’s a laser gun in play…

It will protect the game by attempting to shoot the aliens!

In this case, there is nowhere for the alien to hide: Clear shot! The alien dies. Which means we go back to rock, paper, scissors… Scissors still wins!

The laser gun still shoots all the aliens, and scissors stíll wins! (The number of aliens thrown does not matter, and neither does their actual position when thrown)

Well… This looks problematic for the aliens!.. Anything they can use?!

Text pages 7 & 8: Introducing — The rock!

The rock plays a double role! It not only plays rock, paper, scissors, but it can also be used by aliens to hide together from the laser gun! In this case, the aliens still survive… Alien wins! (Again, the number and position of aliens never matter)

Multiple laser guns in play!?

What if there’s another laser gun? With only one rock to hide behind, the aliens still get shot from the side! For the aliens to survive, there needs to be at least one rock per laser gun.

Wait a minute!.. Who wins now!?

Text pages 9 & 10: Lasergun wins! (somehow)

Now… This looks like an odd situation: There are no surviving aliens, but since rock, paper, and scissors are all present, there is no clear winner there either! In case there are no other clear winners and there is a laser gun… Laser gun wins!

So let’s resume…

  • Rock wins — When there is at least one rock, not a single paper, and no surviving aliens.
  • Paper wins — When there is at least one paper, not a single scissors, and no surviving aliens.
  • Scissors wins — when there is at least one scissors, not one rock, and no surviving aliens.
  • Alien wins — When there is at least one alien, and no more laser guns than rocks.
Laser gun wins — When there is at least one laser gun, and no other clear winners.
  • Rethrow!— No winner…? — No alien? No laser gun? Rock, paper, scissors stalemate? rethrow!

Clear? Good! Let’s start playing!

Text pages 11 & 12: Gameplay: QUICK ‘N EASY

  1. Take the 8 white dice, leave out the blue.
  2. All players sit in a circle.
  3. The players decide which player throws first by “rock-paper-scissors” (with hands!) The winner get’s first throw.
  4. First throw: The player throws all 8 dice in the middle. The first player to call the winner (“rock”, “paper”, “scissors”, “alien”, or “laser gun”) wins the throw and takes one of the dice from the middle.
  5. Next throw: Now, the next player clockwise from the previous thrower throws the leftover 7 dice in the middle, again; the first player to call the winner wins!
  6. Last throw: When the last two dice are thrown, the winning player takes both.
  7. Settling the winner: Now, the players count and the player with the most dice wins! If there are several players with the most dice, the ‘winners’ throw their dice in the middle at the same time for a ‘sudden
death’: The one of them who calls the winner now is the final winner!

Rules: QUICK ‘N EASY

  1. Don’t touch the dice after they’re thrown.
  2. Stick to what you pick — when you’ve made a (wrong) call, you can’t change it.

Text pages 13 & 14: Game mode 2 — DOWN ‘N DICEY

The aliens travelled the universe, but can only think of hiding behind rocks?…

That doesn’t seem realistic, does it? And it isn’t! The aliens got more tricks up their… ‘sleeves’, introducing *drumroll: The blue dice!

When playing DOWN ‘N DICEY, the blue dice is thrown along with the other dice to decide which of the following tricks the aliens will pull:

  1. Let losing players throw 1 dice back.
  2. Hide behind scissors instead of rock.
  3. Hide behind paper instead of rock.
  4. Switch places with rock.
  5. Reverse ‘rock, paper, scissors’.

Let’s look at how each trick changes how to read the throws!

Text pages 15 & 16: Blue dice trick 1 — Grabbing dice back!

This is the only trick where the aliens behave as usual, but after the throw is finished, the losing players need to throw one die back to the middle (if they have any…)

In the example above, aliens only have one rock against two laser guns, and die, after which rock beats scissors and wins.

Blue dice trick 2 — Hiding behind scissors!

For trick number 2 the aliens will hide behind scissors instead of rocks! Yes… We don’t know how that works either, but it does! All other logic stays the same.

In the example above aliens have two scissors against two laser guns, so now the aliens survive, and alien wins!

Text pages 17 & 18: Blue dice trick 3 — Hiding behind paper!

Was hiding behind scissors impressive? Wait and see what they can do with paper! This throw aliens hide behind paper instead of rock. All other logic stays the same.

In the example above aliens have no papers to hide, and die, after which
rock beats scissors and wins.

Blue dice trick 4 — Switch places with rock!

Ok… What? Aliens are now rocks, and rocks are now aliens?! Yes! Maybe the aliens disguised themselves as rocks and put alien masks on the rocks? All other logic stays the same.

In the example above, the rock die (behaves as ‘alien’) has two alien dice (behave as ‘rocks’) against two laser guns. So rock ‘survives’ & rock wins!

Text pages 19 & 20: Blue dice trick 5 — Reversing rock, paper, scissors!

As their final trick, the aliens can reverse the logic of rock, paper, scissors: Somehow rock beats paper, paper beats scissors, and scissors beats rock this throw. All other logic stays the same.

In the example above alien dies (has one rock vs two guns), after which scissors beats rock. Scissors wins!

Did you realise the white dice in each example were the same, but the outcomes were widely different? Better pay close attention to the blue dice!

Text pages 21 & 22: Gameplay — DOWN ‘N DICEY

  1. The magical moment: Take all 9 dice, including the blue! All players sit in a circle.
  2. The first thrower is decided by “rock-paper-scissors”: The Winner gets the first throw!
  3. First throw: The player throws all dice in the middle. The first player making the right call wins and takes one of the white dice.
  4. Next throw: Now, the next player clockwise from the previous thrower throws the leftover dice in the middle; again, the first player with the right call wins, and may take one white die. Note: When the ‘grabbing dice back’ trick of the blue dice had been thrown, all losers who have dice need to throw one back.
  5. Last throw: When the last two white dice are thrown, the winning player takes both. Note: after that, there will be no more throwing back of the dice, regardless of whether the ‘grabbing dice back’ trick had been thrown.
  6. Settling the winner: Now, the players count, and the player with the most dice wins! If there are several with the most dice, the ‘winners’ throw their dice in the middle at the same time, together with the blue dice, for a ‘sudden death’: The winning call wins it all!

Rules: DOWN ‘N DICEY

  1. Don’t touch the dice after they’re thrown.
  2. Stick to what you pick — after a wrong call, you can’t change.

Text back: “I still wonder… Why does laser gun automatically win when there is no other winner? It doesn’t make any logical sense?”

“Does it have to make sense? I never understood how a paper could beat a rock either…?”
