May 1, 2018 is the first day to register .APP domain names

For registered trademark holders, it’s on March 29

This is from Google Registry’s info page:

Here are the important dates to be aware of in 2018:

Mar 29 — May 1: Trademark holders can register .app domains (known as the “Sunrise” period).

May 1 — May 8: Anyone can register available .app domains for an extra fee (known as the “Early Access” period).

May 8 and onwards: Anyone can register available .app domains (known as “General Availability”).

With over 1,500 top-level domains on the internet, many of them are practically unknown to the public due to lack of usage and lack of marketing.

But, with the launch of .APP domain names in May, this could be the inflection point that raises awareness that we are no longer in a dot-com world. Instead, the internet has hundreds of extensions, many of them useful, like .CLUB, .BLOG, .LIVE, .CHURCH, .BIBLE, and many many more.

[registry.google] An explanation of the .app Early Access Program (EAP)

May 2, 2018

EAP is a 7-day period in advance of General Availability (GA) during which domains can be registered immediately. During EAP there is a one-time early access fee in addition to the usual annual price for the domain, which can vary depending on whether the name is standard or premium. This early access fee is one time and not charged for renewals. There are five different price tiers in EAP, starting with the highest tier and decreasing each day as follows:

  • 2018–05–01 16:00 UTC — Tier 1 begins (highest price tier)
  • 2018–05–02 16:00 UTC — Tier 2 begins
  • 2018–05–03 16:00 UTC — Tier 3 begins
  • 2018–05–04 16:00 UTC — Tier 4 begins
  • 2018–05–05 16:00 UTC — Tier 5 begins (lowest price tier, lasts 3 days)
  • 2018–05–08 16:00 UTC — GA begins (no more additional one-time fee)

Domain name registrars set the price they charge for each EAP tier, and prices may vary across registrars. In addition to EAP, there are also premium domains; these domains have higher prices that are independent of EAP. These premium prices apply to renewals as well as initial registrations, and also apply in GA.

See our list of participating registrars for .app for where to buy .app domains in EAP and GA once it begins.
