Do You Think Music?
More so than politics
It seems like everyone has their own art collection, from their edited and instagram photos to their overly populated Facebook pages and personal opinions on twitter. What has happened to the original artist? Music used to be given to us by djs from radio stations, nightclubs and live shows. These were the people with the backbone and good ear that gave us the legendary artists and bands, that have shaped a whole nations culture and changed their way of thinking. Today anyone can make anything and stick it on the web for millions to see. Gone are the days when you had to really search for a record, everything is now on tap. Ans its the people themselves who choose what to listen to and unfortunately this has led to people being fooled into more of a marketing honey pot than an actual piece of music. When someone asked Jimmy Hendrix do you think music has meaning, his reply was “Definitely, its good to be more spiritual than anything now. Pretty soon I believe we are going to rely on music to get some piece of mind or satisfaction, direction actually, more so than politics”. Maybe this time has already come? Hendrix died in 1970, perhaps he was the one who prophesised the progression of the music industry, into a manipulative powerful tool. It seems the clever and good are swept to the side, because they have their own direction and will power, while the easily impressionable and lazy people are swept up because they are given one direction. Music has developed into an iconic piece of culture which is now more global than ever, “more so than politics”. From every different kind of genre of music created in the 21st century, from Dubstep to hip hop and house, they all capture an audience and grip them to evoke emotion, which gets sprayed into everyday life and onto every computer with a vulnerable pair of eyes and a weak minded pair of ears, watching and waiting for the next hook, line or rhythm that has been popularized and manufactured into changing our everyday ideas. People are fed up and bored of politics, the tone never changes, the rhythm and time always seems to tick in the same way and the up to date cultural references made towards current trends such as the Harlem shake or twerking just don’t seem to come across as cool as when Miley decides to let her wild side out. The real difference with music and politics is the same difference you find when looking for the meaning in music, if you try to have meaning, you wont be meaningful, but if you try to evoke your meaning, you already are.
