Software — the “42” of IT

In the context of Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, the number 42 got known as the answer to everything. In IT, I see people having an obsession with technology as the solution for everything. Sure, you need some tech thinking and doing. Believing in technology like it would make all of your problems disappear is like superstition— treating something like “magic”.

“Our processes are bad!” — “Let’s make a software for that!”

“Our communication is bad!” — “Let’s make a software for that!”

“We have too many tools!” — “Let’s make a software for that!”

You cannot solve an organizational problem with technology. It can only support your efforts for change. And you have to invest yourself first. If you have no motivation to change, why do you think anyone around you would change? People will rather find a way around your technology.
