Green Light by Lorde, A Quick Review

As a big fan of Pure Heroine, I always feel kinda ambiguous on the prospect of new album from Lorde. On one hand, it’s been a very long time since Pure Heroine was first released in 2013. Four years have passed since then. It would be very exciting to hear new songs from the artist. However, on the other hand, I always have this suspicion that Lorde, as talented as she might be, will fall victim to another one-hit wonder syndrome. I always feel leery for the possibility of a new album that could equalise Pure Heroine’s success, or even surpass it.

But today I heard Lorde’s new single titled “Green Light” (which will be included in her new album, Melodrama), and it’s great! The song successfully washed away all the doubt I have. It’s simple, radio-friendly, and destined to be an instant hit. It’s not “Royals”, though. “Green Light” is not that kind of song that you will remember one year after its release. But, for me, the song is a testament of the artist’s prowess in songwriting.

I have yet to hear all the song from her new album, but I’m sure it will be full of surprise (like when I stumbled upon the unpopular track “Ribs” in Pure Heroine). If there is anything that could describe Lorde in a single word, that would be ‘unexpected’. She’s been that way since her first rose to fame.
