Maybe it’s a gut feeling from being able to get a good starter out of the game. For example, Curt Schilling and good Dan Haren gave up tons of solo bombs, because they were generally fine with it, and teams wouldn’t get these guys out of games until they got several hits strung together. Obviously stringing several singles/doubles together isn’t better than several homers. But it’s the prevailing wisdom that homers kill rallies anyway.

Another reason (or bullshit explanation really) is Bull Durham logic. Strikeouts are facist; groundballs are democratic. Solo homers are selfish; stringing hits together is a team activity.
