Formatting of the resume: now when it comes to the formatting of resume, keep the following points in mind:

1) Technical CV: can be either of one or 2 pages

2) non-technical CV: should be no more than one page.

Now, it can have anything between 500 to 750 words. As mentioned before, make a good first impression by listing your major achievements at the top. Make sentences short and succinct. Keep font size between 9–10.5 for and between 10.5 to 11.5 for headings. Preferred fonts: Calibri, Cambria, Garamond, times new roman, Tahoma, Verdana, etc. However, I would recommend you use sans-serif fonts over serif ones because they have better readability. Font color should be strictly black and the name should be twice the size of the text. Use 0.5” margins on all sides. To highlight shade the text but not more than 25%. Keep headings and names in the title case style. At last, use an impressive yet not flowery language and be consistent with the form of tense and punctuation you use.

Pro-tip: avoid using any information that shows your religious or political inclination or affiliation.

Once you are done with it, polish your resume by making it presentable and readable. Use lots of white spaces for that. Correct the alignment, line spacing and shorten the lengthy points. Now, we can’t emphasize enough how important the next step is, it is to make sure to get your resume reviewed and proof-read preferably by seniors who’ve actually worked in the same firm. Also, ask your friends to give constructive feedback. Ask whether:

  • Is it legible?
  • Is it getting repetitive?
  • Can it be shortened?
  • Does it draw attention to major points?

The bottom line is: You should be comfortable with what you’ve written. Know each point in your resume thoroughly. And start early.

All the best!
