Our studio gets a lot of inquires from startups, asking the same question, “how much do you charge for a logo design?”. Now as a designer and strategic branding consultant, I know my price-range is not even considered a viable option for a lot of these startups. For them, building a brand has been reduced down to picking a logo, font, color palette, and building a website and Instagram presence.

So I decided to conduct an experiment, and compare three options that startup businesses usually take to launch what they would call, “their brand”:

It’s not every day we get to do the brand development for a hotel that belongs to the Marriott Tribute Portfolio: a family of independent boutique hotels around the world that are characterized by striking design motifs, bold use of color, and noteworthy art installations. All are meant to give you a hotel stay worth talking about. Tribute Portfolio hotels are a magnet for the colorful and quirky, much like the travelers who choose to stay at them.
