JOHN 3:16

Uncle Don is dead and gone.

Does anyone remember

When he wore a hat

and long loose pants

Held up with two elastic blue

Or polka dot suspenders?

He beat his boys with hobnail boots

and locked them up for hours

Aunt Fran would cry

In the mincemeat pie,

Rolling dough, lying low,

Mottled with Gold Medal flour

One Sunday during Pentecost

He fell victim to the Lord.

The big man swooned

In the spirit-filled room

Half-awake enough to take

His heavenly reward.

He commenced to wear a wooden cross

And a PTL lapel pin,

And whacked his kids

Like he always did.

“God above said out of love

That’s the best way to repel sin!”

I thought a lot about the Lamb

By whom sins are erased

How the first are last

And the slow are fast:

How it’s all the same till you change the name.

That’s some amazing grace!
