This is an interesting point but I think it really highlights the difference between companies that use your money to give you 100% renewable energy and those that use your money to invest in *new* renewable energy infrastructure.
In the UK, there are two big green energy companies (and several smaller ones). Good Energy, for example, guarantees you 100% renewable energy, presumably through certificates like your article suggests. Ecotricity, on the other hand, take your money and put it into building new solar, wind and green gas plants. I personally think the latter is much more honest than the former. I’d guess that most European countries have energy providers like Ecotricity too.
