These wings are epic, but you really don’t need anything this complex. Do something unique and inspiring.

Bárbara, you should bring the following clothing to Burning Man:

  1. Lights: These aren’t technically clothing, but I can’t stress enough how important it is that you are lit up at night. Bring at least 5 lights.
  2. Closed-toe shoes: Playa dust is alkaline and will destroy your feet. Some people wear boots, but I find that tennis shoes with socks are plenty and easier to dance in. You’ll also be biking or walking dozens of miles each day, so wearing something comfortable is a good idea. However, your shoes likely won’t survive BM as they will be inundated by dust. The best option might be that old pair of sneakers that are comfortable, but you were thinking of throwing away anyways.
  3. Socks: Again, prevent playa foot.
  4. A hat: This isn’t essential, but can protect your face against the sun, which is intense if it happens to be a year without sandstorms.
  5. UV Headband: Will protect your neck from the sun and double as a comfortable dust mask
  6. Goggles: Essential for surviving dust storms with your eyes intact. Bring more than one pair!
  7. Cheap polarized sunglasses: If it isn’t dusty during the day, it’s super sunny and you’ll need sunglasses!
  8. Warm clothing: Bring a heavy jacket. It can drop to the 30s at night and a classic rookie mistake is to assume that since it’s the desert it will always be warm. I bought an epic one at a thrift store for $30. You’re better off with layers at night. You can always take things off and put them on the ground wherever you’re hanging out (a typical Burning Man practice), but you’ll be happy to have them if the temperature drops.
  9. Daytime clothing: You’ll want a few daytime outfits. It can reach 100 degrees and you’ll be very active during the day. If you’re getting a bike (which I highly recommend), you should avoid short shorts as it will lead to irritation. You would probably like these galaxy pants for biking and yoga. A bathing suit top is also a popular choice. For men, I usually go topless and have on compression shorts or spandex that go to just above my knee.
  10. Underwear: I bring 2x pairs of underwear per day. It’s nice to be able to use these bath wipes in the evening and change underwear before going out.
  11. An extra outfit in a ziplock bag. For after you leave the playa and take your first shower. Playa dust will sneak into pretty much everything that isn’t protected by a ziplock bag.
  12. A tutu: for Tutu Tuesday. You’ll be searching for a tutu if you don’t bring one.
  13. A white costume: for White Wednesday. Not as prolific as tutus on Tutu Tuesday, but it’s a thing.
  14. Other costumes: You should bring fun costumes for the day and night. This isn’t mandatory, but most people will be dressed in costume pretty much the entire time. The more unique your costume is the better! Anything steampunk or that reminds you of Mad Max is perfect. Also remember that this year’s theme is Radical Ritual. You don’t have to follow the theme, but bonus points if you do!

I’ve found most of my costumes at Goodwill and at Burning Man stores in SF and NYC. You can also find amazing costumes and accessories on Etsy.
