Filing a claim for your disability can be a lengthy and nerve wrecking process. You don’t want to just submit it and wait. You want to take an active approach. It’s important that you keep an eye on the status throughout the process. If you do, you can help things move quicker by addressing any problems right away. You are able to check your social security disability claim status during any point in the process.

Here are the ways to check your status during each step in the process:

- The initial application.

It’s important to check the status of your claim often after you submit it. You will then be able to see if it has stalled for some reason. If it has, you will be able to address it right away. You can check your status by calling your social security office or contacting the disability examiner in charge of your case. If you applied through the social security website, you can also check the status online.

- The reconsideration of a claim.

You will need to request a reconsideration if you claim is denied. Once the forms are submitted, you can check the status by calling the social security office or the examiner.

- The appeal forms.

Once you submit your appeal forms, the way you check the status depends on if they have been received by the claims office or not yet. If they haven’t, you can do this by calling your examiner or by calling your local SSA office. If your file has been transferred to the claims office, you will need to call the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review.

- The appeals council review.

The majority of disability claims will end at this point. The claim will either be denied or you will be able to receive benefits when the judge rules in your favor. If you request a review of this decision, either you or your attorney can check the status by calling 703–605–8000.

- The federal court appeal.

The final step you can take is filling a civil lawsuit against the SSA. For this step, you will need an attorney. Your lawyer will be able to convey the status of your claim.

By taking an active approach to your claim, you are able to keep things moving.
