Timely when it was written, just as timely now, with great tips for newcomers. Thanks for writing this up.

I think that, in the past year, I’ve witnessed an increase in snark/condescension, especially in the comments. Thanks to many loud voices of dissent, we’re finally seeing some reaction, and action, by the Stack Overflow team. The most recent being the addition of commenting-flags rolled out in the past few weeks, along with a brand new Code of Conduct. Also, about a week ago, questions asked by first-time posters are now augmented with a waving-hand “New contributor” annotation, and the Answer box is annotate with text calling out that it’s a new user, along with a link to the Code of Conduct. None of this is a magic bullet, of course, but I really think it’s a few steps in the right direction.
