In late May of 2020, I was on a run in my hometown. It was a hot day with a crystal clear sky and I was about a half-mile into my regular route. Nothing special but the sound of tree branches swaying in the wind, birds chirping and (socially-distancing) neighbors mowing their lawns, with a wave of “Hello!”.

Recently, I had met with a friend from college over dinner. We both made a commitment to checking-in with one another every two months or so to catch up, share stories and to see where life was taking us.

This friend is someone whom I admire very much; she consistently works hard to surpass her goals and she continues to impress me with her self-awareness in where she is in both her personal life and career. While she isn’t working in UX, the field would be lucky to have her if she chose to become a member of the profession.

Sometimes, it takes time to get to where you want to go.

In the last few months, I have struggled to speak with family openly about my UX job search, as well as the impact it has had on me both mentally and physically.

While I have pushed hard on the networking front — scheduling calls, sending cold emails, attending MeetUps, completing design challenges and also reaching out to additional professional connections — I am still pushing forward towards this unknown design future.

Living in New York City is a hustle — many folks whom I know personally work “side hustles”, which are additional freelance projects that help keep them afloat on top of their day-to-day career.
