I shouldn’t be weighing in on this as an agnostic, borderline atheist with a history in 10 different faith traditions thanks to my mother (Mormon, Catholic, Baptist, Christian Scientist, Seventh Day Adventist, Methodist, etc.), but I have a good friend who is a retired evangelical pastor (Church of the Nazarene), and we talk about how if he had been my pastor, I might not have left the church. A lot of that stems from the grossly out of date beliefs the churches always had about social issues, which I observed even as a child. Hearing about churches brave enough to shed old traditions make me feel like I can breathe easier.
