First results from the Digital Nomads Survey

We live in the era of internet, collaborative consumption and accessible air travel. Millions of experienced freelancers, entrepreneurs and startups are now truly able to work remotely at any time from any place. While talking about “Digital Nomads” you hardly find any data. We wanted to understand more about this trending topic and answer the following questions.

Who are those people? Will this become normality or simply fade away?
Can you build a successful business while travelling? And much more…

The purpose of the Digital Nomad Survey is to better understand people and professions involved while supporting the worldwide independent workers movement. With your help, we will create a snapshot about (location) independent professionals, while collecting insights about their culture, vision and needs.

First results of the survey

So far around 500 people answered the questions and we are able to share a first snapshot with you. In the next weeks we will get deeper into the results and share more infos. You can still add your voice and fill out the survey.

Gender

We are really happy to not only see male software developers travelling the world. Almost 40% woman seems like a very good rate and hopefully it will grow even more in the future.

Age

We expected the young and independent people to lead this result. But we’re prooved wrong. Most of the nomads seems to be between 25–36 years and are more experienced.

Relationship

You thought most nomads are singles? Well, seems like many of them are in a relationship or married.

Kids

Nomads have 0.29 kids in average.
Over 80% have no kids at all.

Work-Experience

Good to know — you should be experienced before you go remote. Over 65% are practicing their job for more than 3 years.

Frequency of travelling

How much are digital nomads travelling? Our first results shows that the majority have visited at least 3 countries in the last 12 month.

Time spend / location

60% are staying at least one month before they move on.

Same location again?

We asked if they travel to the same location more than once. An incredible high number is returning to the spots they like. Hello Bali?!

Working on the beach…

Many nomads truly believe that you can run a successful business on the road — but 50% think the work on a sunny beach is just an illusion.

Are you happy?

Whether people are working remote or not — they seem to be happy.
Thats a great result :)

More Answers & Next steps

We have collected many more answers about income, work environments, countries, professions, clients, preferred accomodation etc. We are working on more detailed results and will come up with a longer post in the near future.

Feel free to share the survey so we can get more insights — we will close the survey at 15. May.

If you are interested in the raw data of the results feel free to contact us. We will distribute the survey-answers on our website after the survey is finished.
