‘Winter is coming.’ How to never get sick again

Something that I’d like to humbly brag about is that any staff member that has ever worked for me rarely gets sick. As for me? Well considering I’m the only doctor practicing in the clinic I just can’t afford to be sick. I don’t remember the last time I actually fell ill. So want to know what my secret is?

Here are my secret weapons to staying healthy while everyone around me is dropping like flies.

Sleep

No matter what I do during the day I have to get my sleep in. Even if it means I stayed up the night before. I may be deprived of my typical schedule but the minute I’m not at work I’ll be damned if I don’t get my siesta in. It’s all about staying balanced and not being sleep deprived. There are way too many benefits to getting adequate sleep but since this is an immunity based article

Chiropractic care

You heard it right. I get checked by a Chiropractor weekly. Why at that frequency? Because I beat my body up daily since I use a very physical technique. Ensuring a proper functioning spine and nervous system is the foundation on which all health is built on.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is often called the sunshine vitamin

According to Health Canada we are to supplement with 1000 I.U.s daily. But I’m here to tell you that the number is way too low. The research is clear. Especially during the winter months, you will want to supplement with at least 4–5000 I.U.s. Yes, five times the recommended amount. The reality is most of us are on the deficient side when it comes to Vitamin D levels. The most accurate method of determining your levels is through a Vitamin D blood test. During the summer months you merely need to spend time outdoors in order for certain UV rays from the sun to activate the Vitamin D on your skin.

Probiotics

This is one supplement I never stop taking. Gut health is fundamentally important when it comes to the immune system. Why? Because 75% of our immune system is housed in our gastrointestinal tract. So your gut flora should have a good balance of bacteria. The easiest way to do that is through a supplement that has all the necessary strains as well as prebiotics to induce the continued survival and activity of the microorganisms.

Meditation

This was a game changer for me. Any one that thinks this is some new-age type stuff is really missing out on the amazing benefits to both physical and mental well-being. Through the practice of mindfulness I’m able to cut out all the mental noise that leads to anxiety, stress, and poor overall health. Instead meditation helps me focus on my physical body and surroundings thereby allowing me control over my breathing, blood pressure, heart beat, and even pain sensation.
