The importance of Dental Health

We’ve all been there, sitting in the waiting room to get your teeth fixed. Although sometimes painful, and uncomfortable, these visits are not only ideal to making sure your teeth are healthy, but also can play a crucial role in your overall health. Dental health is an increasing concern with primary care physicians and should be taken more seriously.

Physicians are very skilled at what they do and can diagnose an individual healthy, but they often are not specialists in oral hygiene. That begs the question, how can having poor dental hygiene affect your overall health? DDS Connelly explained a story of how his grandfather, with perfect health, passed from a stroke. He explained how his grandfather needed to get teeth extracted and those teeth carried over twenty million tiny particles of bacteria floating around. These micro organisms can slowly make their way into the body and create some hefty damage. As he explained, “My grandfather was bragging about how healthy he was — while I’m extracting a severely infected molar, a tooth that has probably been harboring millions of infectious, inflammation-inducing bacteria — for probably 20 years!

Besides DDS Connelly’s concerns with this issue, many oral hygiene brands are looking to push individuals to really focus on their teeth by obtaining proper dental health coverage and brushing and keeping up with dental routines dentists suggest. Colgate speaks about the potential issues with failing dental health and how it can affect your body today and later down the line.
