Three ways that artificial intelligence will save the planet

When most people think of artificial intelligence, they think of machines that are practically undiscernible from humans. They walk, talk, and act just like us. While many artificial intelligence researchers are working towards this goal, it’s only one small part of the industry. Many researchers aren’t interested at all in creating machines that can walk or talk, and they certainly don’t care about what they look like. They’re interested in creating machines that can think like us. This branch of artificial intelligence, called deep learning, is trying to combine what computers are already good at (sorting through massive amounts of data) and applying humans’ ability to think to help understand all that data. There are many different practical uses of such technology. Here’s a look at three AI projects that are already underway that can help save the planet.

Species conservation

Cornell University’s Institute for Computational Sustainability is working on an artificial intelligence system that would allow ordinary people to submit data about birds that they observe and where they observed them. From all this data, they could estimate the number of species in a given area and could help with species conservation.

Phytoplankton research

Phytoplankton is a microscopic plant that floats in the world’s oceans and is responsible for producing much of the oxygen that we breathe. NASA is working on an artificial intelligence system that would be able to better track the amount of phytoplankton on the planet.

EarthCube

The planet is three-dimensional but so much of what we know is limited to surface level only. EarthCube is a project that will combine massive amounts of scientific data from many different scientific fields and will help us to understand our planet and how everything interacts like never before.
