History of E-commerce in India:
1. Phase-1 (1995–2000’s)

The introduction of the Internet in India in 1995 marked the beginning
of the first wave of e-commerce in the country. India’s first online B2B
directory was launched in 1996. The liberalization of the country’s
international trade policies was the main factor that enhanced the
growth of B2B virtual portals.

2. Phase-2 (2000’s- 2015)
This is when people started learning about tech and the internet. there
has been a significant development in e-business, specifically in the
areas of traveling, retailing, group purchasing, societal interaction, etc.
Also, IRCTC started its online ticketing booking, and after that people
started booking online with the help of centers.

3. Phase-3 (2016-Present)
The Internet phase started booming in India. The user base in India
just exploded with mobile phones and 4g. People started availing of the
e-commerce industry, thus pushing the industry to thrive with
prospects.

Growth of E-commerce in India:
After China and the US, India had the third-largest online shopper base
of 150 million in FY21 and is expected to be 350 million by FY26.

The e-commerce market share of Tier-3 cities grew from 34.2% in 2021
to 41.5% in 2022. At the same time, Tier-2 cities rose from 19.4% to
21.4% from 2021 to 2022.

Problems with the Growing e-commerce in India:

  1. Growing of Logistics with the growth of e-commerce: The
logistics challenge in India is not just about the lack of
standardization in postal addresses. Given the large size of the
country, there are thousands of towns that are not easily accessible.

2. More and more returns: Returns are expensive for e-commerce
players, as reverse logistics presents unique challenges. This
becomes all the more complex in cross-border e-commerce.

3. Inconsistent address: The given address is not enough to reach a
customer, because of multiple names and complex transportation.
There needs a little standardization in address.

4. Standardization of size chart: We know that everyone is unique in
their own way, as in India there is no standard for cloth sizes. This
creates problems sometimes while buying clothes online.
Sometimes a person fits an L-size t-shirt from one brand whereas a
size M from another brand.

5. Low penetration of Credit cards in Payments: Credit card
penetration in India is also relatively low, at around 2% of the
population. In the upcoming years, it is supposed to decrease more,
and meanwhile, many people preferring to pay using digital wallets
and UPI payments.
