When you begin your search for a job or internship you may feel completely lost and overwhelmed by the amount of different jobs and qualifications you are trying to meet. But one thing you may notice while on your search is that a lot of employers use similar words when describing the requirements for the job. These are called keywords. Keywords will make your journey through the treacherous job market a little less hectic because they will fine tune your search and help you land the job you want. Not only that but applying specific keywords to your resume or cover letter will make you more appealing to employers.

As a marketing major my job search has been both stressful and educational. I’m looking to gain what experience I can with a business I would enjoy working for but right now I’m more focused on getting my feet wet.

Throughout my search, I’ve noticed that many job ads have similar keywords such as “strong written and verbal communication skills” or “organizational skills”. Along with those keywords many of the ads required knowledge or experience working with both Adobe and Microsoft programs such as Photoshop and Excel. Knowing this, it would be beneficial to include broader keywords like “strong communication skills” but the more specific you are, the more successful you will be. Using the names of specific programs like Adobe or Microsoft would narrow down your search, boost your resume, and improve your chances of getting the job.

Write an introduction and overview: Introduce the idea of Job Ad and Keyword research: what is it and why is worth doing? Introduce your job search (what’s your field; what kind of opportunities are you looking for?) What did you learn: emphasize what was significant, unique, or surprising about your results. Summarize your findings: What does it suggest you (and others) should do; what were the main types or best examples of keywords to use?]
