Wealth and The Believer-Pastor Mercy Githinji

Wealth is a word that draws out varied definitions from different people which lean mostly towards an abundance of material riches or valuable possessions, but wealth is much more than having material things of value.

Like with our lives, wealth is for the purpose of fully expressing and displaying Gods glory. We call it worship. Whatever wealth we have is to glorify God.

What is wealth?

From the dictionaries, it is An abundance or plentiful supply of something desirable.

In the bible, The Hebrew word used to define wealth is Chayil (pronounced khahyil) .

Chayil means A force-whether of men, means or resources.

A force is a power or strength that causes positive action or movement. Wealth is a force or strength or ability to cause change in the earth. This can come through us and other people, through the methods we use or even through resources available.

The first thing God does when He creates man in Gen 1 is to endow him

with capacity to manage what God had created as well as a capacity to cause increase and growth. Read Gen 1; 26–28. So we see that God is at the centre of all wealth; as creator of heaven and earth and as one who has endowed us with every ability.

Deut 8:17–18 “then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’18 “And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

7 key aspects of wealth:

1. Grace

It is the God substance in us. All that Christ is, He is inside of us. The one who owns all things and is custodian of every anointing and ability is resident in us.

Gal 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”

Scripture also says we are heirs of God (Rom 8;17 & Gal 4; 6–7)

2. Knowledge, Skills and Gifts

Man is wired to function through knowledge. Adam ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil which opened for him a world of evil and now he could sin.

Man is restored through knowledge — the knowledge of God.

Prov 24:3–4 Through wisdom a house is built, And by understanding it is established; 4 By knowledge the rooms are filled With all precious and pleasant riches.

Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Knowledge in every day includes formal and informal school which shapes how we interact with the world around us. It shapes our careers and professions. We also have access to information which may lead us to a positive or negative direction. Today information is very accessible- e.g you can get anything on google. The famous saying ‘garbage in-garbage out’ holds water. It is said that man is his mind. Pr 23:7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
