Engineering Internships Summer 2013

The Application Window for Internships is now closed.

Be part of our very first group of interns

Obvious is looking for a very special group of students to join us in San Francisco during the summer of 2013. We are specifically looking for outstanding engineers who want to challenge themselves and who share our passion for making the world a better place.

What’s it like?

You will be joining a small, diverse team of uniquely talented designers & engineers at one of the most exciting startups in San Francisco that are on a mission to change the world.

Other than that, we don't know yet! It’s our first time and together we’re going to learn a ton about how to do this. Things will probably be messy, but they will also be awesome because you’ll be part of our company at a unique point in our growth history that no later interns will be able to experience. You will blaze the trail for those who follow you.

We expect your internship will last about 10-12 weeks, with flexible start & end dates just for you.

One thing is certain: as an intern at Obvious you’ll have an assigned mentor whom you’ll work closely with.

What will I do?

You’ll be building Medium because that’s what we do here. There’s a lot to do and it’s all important.

If you’d like to learn more about the technology you’ll be working with you can check out our open source projects.

Who can apply?

You’ll need to be currently enrolled in a 4 year academic institution and be taking courses in computer science. Ideally you’ll be entering your final year when you leave the internship program, but that’s not a requirement.

You’ll need the legal right to work in the United States.

You’ll need to speak and write English very well. As you might have noticed, Medium is about writing.

You’ll need to be able to work from our office in downtown San Francisco for the duration of your internship.

You’ll need to have demonstrated serious coding chops. Great grades are of course important but so are open source or personal projects that stand above the crowd. We want to see what you can do.

What’s in it for me?

Wealth, Fame, Power? Well… none of those.

We offer a salary sufficient to live in San Francisco and save some money for college.

We’ll help you find housing so you don’t have to stress about that.

We’ll pay for a gym membership a block from the office to keep you healthy.

There are free drinks & snacks in the office and occasional catering.

You’ll be surrounded by people who love learning and personal growth and who want to share that with you. We have Yoga in the office, a technical lending library and lots of cutting edge toys to play with.

What’s in it for Obvious?

We’ve already hired some of the best engineers in the world and we’d like to hire some more. If you’re awesome and are still in school we want to get to know you. If you’re successful in your internship there’s a real possibility we’ll ask you to come back as a full time employee once you’ve finished school.

We’re also looking for fresh eyes and new ideas. There are amazing things happening in Medium and we’re sure you can imagine ways it could be even better.

How do I apply?

Compose an email addressed to with the subject line Engineering Internship 2013. Write a brief description of why you want to work on Medium. Attach a PDF of your resume & some links to work you’ve done that you want to bring to our attention. Finally, hit the Send button.

What then?

We’ll respond to your application in January, 2013. If for any reason you need a decision before then, be sure to let us know.
