Spies in the Capital: Giving Classified Information to Russians
1888 Press Release — A new e-book offers a frightening true story that reveals disturbing incidents surrounding KGB spies and other shocking revelations.
“If he’d been alive, Ian Fleming could have written a chapter or two from the scenes I witnessed in 1982,” says Pamela Sherrod about her own new book. It was the year that she became the Senior Intern in U.S. Senator Lowell Weicker’s office after her predecessor was taken into custody for allegedly giving KGB agents classified information.
In “Rough Journey to God: Scars and Memories of Bullies, Spies, and Celebrities,” Sherrod recounts some of the shocking experiences she had in the Capital during the late 1970’s and 1980’s. Her internship in Senator Weicker’s office was one of the most eye-opening events of her life, but not for the reasons that she’d initially expected.
Prior to her internship, she’d gained most of her images of spies, particularly Russian spies, from the James Bond films based on Fleming’s books. “In those depictions of espionage, the scenes were often shot in distant and exotic locations and populated with beautiful women who usually fell in love with the charming British spy,” says Sherrod. “And since it was during the Cold War, the Russians, or actually the Soviets, were always depicted as the bad guys.”
So, Sherrod was stunned when she learned that an incident of espionage could actually take place, not only on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol but right within her own office. What was most frightening, however, was that she’d befriended and partied with, not only the intern who was accused of colluding with Soviet spies but her supervisor, who was later accused of involvement with Cuban spies.
Sherrod, who’s just released the e-book version of her story, is amazed by the nature of the unfolding events in Washington and the similar issues that have been raised about espionage and the treatment of classified information. She feels that there couldn’t be a better time to share her unforgettable experience.
“It’s a coming of age story that transcends the boundaries of race, nationality, and politics,” says Sherrod. Looking back on her stormy life, she was once too frightened to speak about her past, particularly the brutal hazing incidents she endured in college, her affair with a Saudi Arabian diplomat, and an incident of sexual harassment. However, she realized that everything happened for a reason, and she can help others who’re going through painful experiences by sharing her own.
“I’ve offered my story to address the timeless issues involved in growing up and searching for a sense of belonging and identity. It illustrates the inner conflict that one experiences when letting go of idealistic and romantic impressions of the world to face very difficult realities.”
Those difficult realities eventually led Sherrod to what she calls “a spiritual journey,” and a desire to seek a role in ministry. Like many of her projects, she uses her past experiences to warn young people about the dangers that can exist, even in glamorous places, and to inspire them to reach for uplifting goals in their lives.
“I certainly made some costly mistakes that exposed me to some shocking experiences,” says Sherrod. “But they also provided me with a great deal of insight, and the ability to empathize with people who’ve experienced traumatizing events.”
Proceeds from Sherrod’s book are used to provide outreach programs such as the Academy of Arts and Healing, which she launched to offer art therapy and entrepreneurial opportunities to people who’re battling with severe depression and PTSD. The program was initially planned to offer support services to women and children in crisis situations but was expanded to provide opportunities to men, as well.
Sherrod also produces inspirational documentaries, especially about miracles, and looks forward to producing uplifting feature films for young people.
