Arenal Volcano is an active andesitic stratovolcano (a conical volcano built up by many layers (strata) of hardened lava and tephra). Tephra is composed of rock fragments and particles ejected by volcanic eruptions. Arenal is located in northwestern Costa Rica and has an approximate height of 5436 feet.
