I can tell you (or perhaps write an essay on) why I’m still using my iphone 4.
For starters, it’s the perfect size for my tiny hands. I can easily use it one handed while having to hold on on the train or tram, and even while travelling with a coffee in one hand or holding my boyfriends hand. Secondly, the headphone jack is in the perfect place. It doesn’t get in the way of my pinky finger or not allow me to close my downward flip case cover with the headphones plugged in. I appreciate being able to have my headphones plugged in with my flip case closed; not having the plug in the way at the bottom.
Now the way I get around the power issue (and yes it have noticed a significant difference over time) is to carry a good quality high mAh external charger. You would probably need one for any phone eventually. I use a 5000 mAh Sony charger.
Basically this phone does everything I need it to. Calls, text, email, my favourite games (Words with friends, Cookie clickers), calendar, apps, music. Yes it can be a bit slow sometimes (and there’s not a lot I can do about that. Given that it’s only 3g doesn’t help). But honestly I’m not in a rush to get things done. It’s not like it’s ridiculously slow or anything, just showing it’s age. But it suits me and everything I need it to do.
There are a few reasons why I’m hesitant in upgrading. Size is a big factor for me. The iphone 4's 3.5 inch screen is perfect for me. All other iphones have bigger screens, and me and my small hands are not fans of that. Also, and this is a major bugger, the placement of the headphone jack. Now being on the bottom would interfere with the type of cases I’m used to using. Sure life is about compromises, but when it comes to my phone, it ain’t happening. I’m definitely not an Android person either. The changeover is not something I want to deal with, especially having to re-purchase my non-free apps. I do understand that there are much faster, better, cheaper phones out there. And why would someone spend $800 on a new iphone (Aus), which I’m not willing to spend that much money on, when you can get an even better Android phone for much less $$. But they all have bigger screens. I want to be able to continue using my phone the way I always have, without having to compromise just to have something “better”. And what’s the point of a phone if you’re forced to use it with 2 hands. That’s crazy land!!
Summing up. The iphone 4 just works for me. Sure I’d like a faster operating system and a better battery, but life isn’t always about specs. There are other aspects to my phone that make me truly appreciate it. And until the day a phone is made to my required specifications, I am holding onto my beloved iphone 4.
Ok, what if the phone dies one day? (and we all will). I will try to get it fixed. And at the end of the day if the inevitable happens and it is beyond repair, then I will just have to say goodbye to my beloved phone and move on. Nothing lasts forever.
