So many memories of parents and other adults chastising us for being bored. What they meant was that we should stop complaining. But I think because of that hammered-in idea, once an always-with-us solution to boredom came along, none of us was able to see it as anything but a miracle.

I think the two of you are talking past each other. Caitlin is saying white people in America cannot claim to have a unique culture in the same way that black people can, which is clearly true, because black American culture is based on shared heritage and a shared struggle, both of which are closely tied to the color of their skin.
Lesson: don’t listen to your friends ;-). Molly Ambrogi and Josh Knight both told us to skip Antelope Island/the Great Salt Lake, but it was awesome. A little taste of beach life midway through our journey to the beach.
