Interesting point, but I think the NHL decision is bigger because hockey has more of a storied history at the Olympics than baseball does. Also, MLB has done a good job of making the World Baseball Classic at least approximate the “best-on-best” vibe of the Olympic games—something the NHL failed to do with the World Cup of Hockey, what with its Frankenstein-ed “Team Europe” and “Team North America” rosters.

I think the league was already anticipating the Pyeongchang decision when it decided to reboot the World Cup, but the tournament never caught on the way they thought it would.
