Psychiatry’s Necessary Shadow

I found your article intriguing, but for me overly academic.

As a person with “lived experience,” I’d like to add that how we language our experience contributes to our collective experience of reality. For example, using the terms “mental illness,” “mental health,” and mental disorder,” in my opinion, contribute to the legitimizing of the medical model.

People suffer greatly from mental problems. And involvement with the psychiatric profession usually makes them worse. Whereas peer support groups have been demonstrated to have more positive outcomes.

Giving President Trump a DSM category just reinforces this medical system.

In this crazy world, insane is the new normal.
