A boss, whom I otherwise respect, said this to me years ago when I inquired about family leave as we were expecting our first child, all during a big 60hr/wk push right after an acquisition:

“The best thing you can do for your family is to keep your job”

The veil was lifted in that moment, and I was firmly reminded that it in the realm of employment, it would only ever be me who would be looking out for my family’s interests. I kept the job and the security of a steady paycheck, while negotiating for raises and bonuses far harder than I otherwise would have, and always kept one eye on the door.
